Creating a zen space in your home will open the way for you to de-stress, breathe, and rejuvenate your mind, body, and spirit. Your home should be a haven for you where you can feel safe, secure, and nurtured.

Instructions

1.

Recognize that you are angry about something. The minute you recognize that you are angry, it will be easier to plan a way to release the anger in an effective and constructive way. Though you might feel like throwing a plate at your partner's head, there are other ways to handle it. Know that a resolution is necessary and plan accordingly. You might want to set a time to talk, or choose to write a letter.

Always start a conversation with "I feel..." When you start a conversation with "I feel..." the other person is forced to listen. As long as they are not feeling attacked, whatever you say with "I feel..." is all about you, and not about them, therefore there is no need to go on the defensive.

No one likes to be told what to do or be reminded of what they did wrong, so it is best to avoid the word, "You," as in "You never listen to me. You always come home late. You always steal the remote control." This puts the person on the defensive immediately, and an argument could ensue. By saying, "I feel sad when you come home late because I enjoy spending time with you," sets the tone in a civilized way.

If it is impossible to communicate directly to the person, writing a letter is very helpful. Sometimes writing the letter without actually delivering it is all it takes to get the anger out. Following the same advice of writing how you feel instead of accusing them, serves the same purpose. Begin with "I feel..." and go from there.

Learning to listen to what your partner has to say is a key component of communication. It is a lot easier to listen to someone about their feelings, rather than have a finger pointed at them. This helps keep anger levels from rising, and arguing to a minimum.

Everything in your home is full of energy. When there is an unusual amount of clutter or paper, the energy flow can become stuck. It is difficult to feel calm and relaxed in the midst of chaos. Begin creating your zen space by clearing out the clutter, even if it is in just one part of one room.

2.

Once the clutter is cleared out, you will automatically be breathing better, and may feel lighter. Perhaps that is all you needed to create your zen space, however, a few touches here and there can bring your stress levels down even more. Open the windows and air out the space. Even windows that you never open, should be opened. Already the chi is moving more freely.

3.

Adding a fountain to any room is a huge step in the right direction for creating a zen space in your home. If you are unable to find a tabletop fountain, placing one just outside your door or window will add the relaxing sounds of water flow.

4.

If you are tired of your carpeting, or have tile or wood floors, feel free to add some throw rugs to create a warm and cozy look. Rag, woven, or bamboo rugs are terrific accents for your zen space.

5.

Candles add an ambiance second to none when creating a zen space. Plants bring in a touch of nature needed to feed your soul. Perhaps a Buddha or floor pillows will inspire you to create a meditation corner. Roll up some throw blankets or your yoga mat in baskets. Open the curtains, and hang a piece of stained glass in your window. Letting the light in will lift your mood immensely.

6.

Don't forget the bathrooms! By adding candles or plants around your tub, you have the perfect space to feel zen. Relax and enjoy it!

Tips & Warnings

  • Candles, fountains, plants, rugs, and natural light are lovely components for creating a zen space in your home.

  • A Buddha scupture or candle holder adds a nice touch.
